This sub-domain of the "new" World Towns Network website will be designed to handle communications with the public across the world. As we develop the site it is here that you will find instruction manuals, application forms and other information that will allow you to use the entire site with ease.
This website, and its sub-domains, are not scheduled to be "OPEN" for public use until the late summer of 2012 but like most building sites there is nothing to stop you looking over the fence and watching what we are doing during the construction process.
Over the past 20 years we have designed, built and operated two other large collections of websites; the British Towns and Villages Network and the Huntingdonshire Websites, of which the St Ives Town Web is one of them (both these external websites will open in a new window). With hind sight, we wish we had built them differently but technology has moved on at a pace during that time and so has what people wish to do with it. Rather than starting over and rebuilding them both we are going to take all the good ideas from both of them and roll them into one HUGE website - this one!
The British Towns Network shows you where places; cities, towns and villages, are in the United Kingdom and the St Ives Towns Web and its partner sites show you who and what is there when you get there. Now we are going to do it on a global scale.
Our databases already have an enormous amount of global community information in them, over 10 million records, and the task now is to present that data to you, the user. You can have a look at the two sites linked above and see roughly what we have in mind. You can also come back and visit the World Towns Network websites over the coming months, maybe years and see how we are doing.
Webmaster of the World - September 2011
The continental statistical information being displayed is becoming more accurate as we add further and more detailed information to the lower levels throughout the website.
We have added country flags to all the sovereign states and their respective ISO, FIPS and www identifiers.
We have also added the following information to the country level pages:
We are in the process of adjusting the administrative divisions of many countries, including Greece and Italy, to reflect recent structural/political changes and continue to add further detail and statistics about these locations as we do so.
There are now over 2,599,000 cities, towns and villages, being displayed on the World Towns Network websites and the process of data verification and updating continues as it will for the next few months.
